Initiative: 'Combating the decline of pollinating insects'.
Originator: Janusz Kłys
Location: Łomża
Implementation date: 01/2016-06/2016

Description of the problem encountered: Recent studies show a strong relationship between bee activities and crop yields. Unfortunately, there are still many farmers, or fruit growers, who do not link the role of bee presence with crop abundance. Although the Lomza area is rich in arable fields, meadows, orchards, plantations of raspberries, strawberries and other honey-giving plants, the number of bees in the area is still insufficient.

Activities:

  • two information meetings for farmers at the District Association of Farmers, Circles and Agricultural Organisations on the use of chemicals in agriculture that affect the health and viability of bees;
  • the purchase and replacement of beehives and the relocation of bee colonies.
  • activities for children entitled 'Getting to know the bee'.

Results: Replacing the hives with new ones will ensure better living conditions for the bee colonies especially during the difficult winter period and protect the bees from unfavourable weather conditions. Awareness will also be raised among farmers about the appropriate use of insecticides and their impact on bees and the environment. In addition, there will be an increased awareness among young people about the cooperation between humans and insects. The initiative will also result in an improved livelihood for bee colonies. The apiary will be open to the public.

The 'Counteracting the decline of pollinating insects' initiative, devised by Janusz Kłys - Master Beekeeper, is being implemented as part of the 'Local ecological civic initiatives - together for the environment' project of the Foundation for the Development of Polish Agriculture and financed by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.

Local ecological civic initiatives - together for the environment is a project prepared by the Foundation for the Development of Polish Agriculture, bringing together 20 local ecological initiatives. The main objective of the project is to improve the state of the environment by involving the local community in sustainable development activities. The problems identified concern the Mazowieckie, Podlaskie, Lubelskie, Łódzkie, Małopolskie and Dolnośląskie voivodships. Their authors include representatives of non-governmental organisations operating locally, schools, institutions, but also individuals. Each of the initiatives is an attempt to solve a local environmental problem, which is intended to provide an impulse and initiate further actions to permanently protect nature and the environment, and to shape lasting habits in this respect.
